Summer Hedgerow Coloring Book Tutorials

Here are all twenty full-length tutorials showing step by step how I painted each of the paintings in the Summer Hedgerow Coloring Book, in the same order as the book.

If you are a beginner you might enjoy painting each tutorial a few times, firstly by printing the sketch directly onto a piece of lightweight watercolor paper, so that it’s quick to start again if you need to, then by tracing the design onto a heavier piece of watercolor paper once you’re more confident, so that you can erase the lines when you’ve finished painting, and finally by copying the design yourself and enjoying the variations you’ll inevitably get, so that you begin to discover and develop your own style.

This painting was done with a 0.05 Staedtler pigment liner and three colours. I used the three colours listed below, but if you'd like to express a different mood, just choose three different colours! Take a stroll through a summer meadow with me! In this tutorial I first show you my full drawing and composition process, as I create this design of poppies, daisies and buttercups with a dragonfly, a bee and a ladybird adding colour and character. Then in stage two we paint the flowers and insects in either one, two or three layers. And finally we add lines in ink to create a nostalgic illustration effect. Today I'm painting three wild flower plants that grow in my garden - French style wild roses, foxgloves and feverfew. Starting with a sketch, I then complete an ink drawing which I finish with watercolour washes.
