Welcome Winter: Finding Warmth, Joy, and Inspiration at the Watercolor Table

This new season brings with it a host of new artistic possibilities.

Embracing the Cozy Winter Studio Mood

We never paint with perfection in mind in my studio. Winter painting is all about bright and cheerful seasonal whimsy, the soft snowy greys of skies and landscapes, and the pleasure of revisiting traditional motifs like old friends. It’s about embracing atmosphere and quiet creativity.

My vision for this winter…

My Winter Palette: Deep greens and blues, vibrant crimsons and pinks, and shadowy smoky greys and umbers.
My Seasonal Subjects: Capturing the stark beauty of winter trees, bathing cozy interiors in glowing candlelight, and painting soft, snowy landscapes.
Bite-Sized Projects: Exploring the pleasure of working on a smaller scale—focusing on hand-painted cards, bookmarks, and gift tags to keep painting relaxed, pressure-free, and fun.

Simple Tips to Get Started This Season

If you haven’t picked up a paintbrush for years but feel the urge to start, here are three simple ways to enjoy winter painting:

1. Keep it Small: Start with tiny paintings. Paper measuring 5 x 7 inches folded in half makes a sweet greeting card, while postcard-sized sheets or tiny sketchbooks feel much friendlier than a large, blank page!

2. Traceable Sketches are Your Friend: Don’t let a dislike of drawing hold you back! We have hundreds of free traceable sketches available on our website downloads page. Choose your sketch, transfer it over, and Bob’s your uncle—you can jump straight to the fun part: playing with color! We also have two beautiful Christmas Coloring Books: Traditional Christmas and Whimsical Christmas. Each has 20 sketches, and 20 full-length tutorials to go with them.

3. Paint Along in Real-Time: Turn on one of our YouTube playlist tutorials and let the real-time narration guide you stroke-by-stroke through every wash and detail.

Remember – Done is always better than perfect! The beauty of hand-painted winter art lies in the quiet moment you took to create it and the warm heart behind it.

Head over to our YouTube Channel to browse the full Christmas & Winter playlists, and keep an eye out for our upcoming 2026 Christmas videos.

We are also running our Tiny Classic Christmas Daily Challenge during November, featuring a tiny, inspirational prompt illustrated by me in a video available to everyone this month!

So gather your paper and paints, and let’s make this 2026 winter season our most creative one yet!

Happy painting!
