Hi Insiders!

We've been busy on Patreon again this week

A few weeks ago we introduced you to two new Collections on Patreon:

Begin with Watercolor Painting and More Watercolor Painting.

These two Collections are specially curated sets of ad-free tutorials which cover a wide range of beginner-friendly and improver-friendly techniques and styles. All paid tiers can access the first set of twenty videos, and everyone from Relaxation up can access the second set of thirty videos.
Have you been enjoying these Collections?
If so, please let us know in the comments!

Now we're introducing Collections by Topic

If you pop over to our Collections Tab on Patreon now, you'll find we've added some new tutorial collections, this time organised by topic.

These new Collections are mixtures of tutorials which are free for everyone (and might have ads on them) and tutorials which require you to be a Patron to view them (and will not have any advertising).

FYI: In case you're curious, the free tutorials on our Patreon page are hosted on YouTube, whereas the ad-free tutorials are hosted on the Patreon platform itself - which makes it possible for us to guarantee that there will never be any ads on them.

Here's a list of the topics you'll find so far:

If you have ideas for topic Collections you'd like to see,
let us know by commenting or sending us a message on Patreon!

Not a Patron Yet?

(and what IS a Patron anyway?)

Like many "creators" we rely on income from two main sources: advertising, and direct support from our audience.

Relying on advertising puts the advertiser in control.

Relying on direct support puts creativity back in control.

As the name suggests, Patreon has at its core a very, very old idea - that the Arts require patronage. But in this modern world there's a twist. Today the real patrons of the arts are no longer kings and emperors, but people like you. And the artists are no longer Michaelangelos and Titians, but people like me. And as a result there are many, many more artists.
If you think about it, this is a remarkable thing. It is a true democratisation of art. Never before has it been possible for anyone, anywhere in the world, to learn from anyone, anywhere in the world. It's not just art either, of course. And it's all achieved with just a few dollars a month from each supporter!

So if you aren't supporting us on Patreon yet, and if you can spare $3 a month, please consider adding your name to our growing (but still quite small) list of Patrons. Every new patron gives us a bit more creative freedom, so if you enjoy our content becoming a patron is a gift that you give both to us and to yourself!

Sparkles = Smiles

There's no doubt about it. Whether or not we expect it, like it, or even approve of it, there's something about sparkly paint that makes us smile! And the many and various metallic watercolors I've been trying out recently from MAB Watercolours on Etsy are definitely sparkly!
If you've seen my latest video you will have seen my selection of pans from her Mirror, Holographic, Ocean, Vivid, Galaxy and Golden ranges, and how some of them behave on paper. I'm still getting to know them but the more I use them the more I can see uses for them. Watch out for some dragonflies coming soon, with a new technique which I've been working on recently.

About MAB Watercolours

These paints are all handmade in the UK by Milena, an Etsy Star Seller. She ships worldwide and offers free international shipping over £30 (about $38). and you can have 10% off your order using the code DIANE10.

This Week on YouTube

Two very different tutorials went up on our YouTube channel this week. One loose floral pattern, demonstrating the use of gouache with ordinary watercolor to add structure but keep some transparency. And one sparkly play ideal for those days when you just don't know what to paint (and don't particularly want to think about it either!)

Most Popular...

The most popular video this week once more is the Spring and Easter Collection which includes a range of flowers, birds, greetings cards and bookmarks. If you haven't seen it yet, do take a look.

But we also have a favor to ask of you.

Last week we put together our 13th non-stop watercolor compilation. It's a collection of 11 of our most popular whimsical bird tutorials, which between them cover pretty much all of the techniques and materials anyone could possibly need to start and gain confidence in watercolor. We know that this video would be enjoyed by lots of our viewers, both new to the channel and long-term friends, but it hasn't been noticed by the recommendation algorithm... Yet.

Can we change that?

Please show this video some love! Click below to view it on YouTube and leave it running in the background while you go about your weekend, or browse through the chapters for a gem from our archives that you've missed. Let's see if we can give it a boost and persuade YouTube to show it more widely!

To Inspire You...

We planted some tulip bulbs last year, and a few days ago the first one opened. Here are a couple of photos which we hope you'll enjoy (and please feel free, as always, to use them as reference photos without restriction).
Thanks for reading, and we hope you enjoyed this edition of the Insiders' Newsletter.
See you next week!
