This week's inspiration comes from one of our favorite poets, Mary Oliver, whose poetry was described in the New Yorker as using nature as a "springboard to the sacred". This poem reminds me that the world doesn't need - or even want - us to amaze it, but that it offers generously and endlessly to amaze us, if we simply stop for a moment.

Wild Geese
You do not have to be good.
You do not have to walk on your knees
for a hundred miles through the desert, repenting.
You only have to let the soft animal of your body
love what it loves.
Tell me about despair, yours, and I will tell you mine.
Meanwhile the world goes on.
Meanwhile the sun and the clear pebbles of the rain
are moving across the landscapes,
over the prairies and the deep trees,
the mountains and the rivers.
Meanwhile the wild geese, high in the clean blue air,
are heading home again.
Whoever you are, no matter how lonely,
the world offers itself to your imagination,
calls to you like the wild geese, harsh and exciting—
over and over announcing your place
in the family of things.

As I type, I'm looking at an onion from my garden, which for some reason has been living on the desk between a stack of external hard drives and a pair of noise cancelling headphones for a while. It's a beautiful little onion, so I thought I'd add a photo of it to illustrate the point that the natural world is always trying to attract our attention!
