Hi Insiders!
This week we released our first downloadable Reverse Coloring Book!
I first discovered the term "reverse coloring" last year. I was enjoying playing around with my set of Poetique Brush Pens, and as I became more familiar with what they can do I started to explore what I called "watercolor brush sketching" in some of my YouTube videos. In fact we created a little playlist of them.
Essentially my method was to paint a loose watercolor background, or the first layer of a painting, and then "draw" a more detailed second layer with brush pens. I love this technique because it allows you to benefit from all of the advantages of watercolor and avoid dealing with the disadvantages.
Reverse Coloring is a very similar concept to my Watercolor Brush Sketching idea, but generally (although not always) people seem to add lines to the watercolor backgrounds with fineliners or markers in a single color.
My new digital Reverse Coloring Book is perfect for anyone who wants to explore either of these methods of creating art, which are quick, mess-free, stress-free, excellent practice, and perfect for making into a family activity. And the beauty of a digital book is that you can print as many copies of each page as you like!

Thursday's YouTube video shows me painting three of the pages in the coloring book. Watch out for another video coming soon showing me coloring some of the pages in!

New to Reverse Coloring?
Here are some thoughts on how to use my new book...
If you read about reverse coloring online you'll find people promising that it will literally change your life. Perhaps it will, perhaps it won't, but it can definitely be a very relaxing thing to do, and it will certainly teach you a lot about composition and sketching if you do enough of it.
The trick is to start with the right mindset, so you don't sabotage your own chances of success! Here are a few ideas to get you off on the right track.
- Print the book out on inexpensive paper. Even very cheap copier paper is fine for fineliners or watercolor brush pens and you are less likely to feel inhibited.
- Plan to do each page multiple times, perhaps trying something different or perhaps trying to do the same thing again.
- Don't force yourself to "finish" every attempt. It's ok to not like what you've done and start again.
- Try not to think.
- Try not to plan a specific outcome.
- Don't expect to "succeed" or notice improvement immediately, but have faith in the process and in yourself.
- Enjoy it, laugh about it, share it. (We'd rather you didn't share the actual file!... but feel free to get together with friends and family and print as many copies as you need!)
